07013 - The Progress

Well, I’ve already spent a good bit of time and energy telling you all about the LEDs I put in this new guitar (see here and here) I thought maybe it was time I talked about the rest of this project.

This is the second guitar I’ve built for Chris Peters.  The point of this project was to give Chris a backup instrument that is somewhat more rugged than his first Chellee guitar.  Not that the instrument is unstable, but Chris is a human solvent (don’t worry, he knows).  His body chemistry eats through everything it touches including metal plating and most finishes.  I typically spray finishes that will not give me cancer and unfortunately for Chris these are all solvent based finishes, meaning they can be softened by some chemical (like Chris).  What he needed was an instrument to match the tonal and playability characteristics of his current pride and joy, but was more impervious to Him.

What we eventually came up with was what you might call an upgrade.  It was based on his first Model I with a few extras.  Starting with a black polyurethane finish and of course green DiMarzio pickups we were on our way to a pure rock guitar (with late 80’s class).  Then then discussion rapidly escalated, with statements, “Dude, you should put _____ in it!”  These of course whether suggested by him or me were generally accepted with enthusiasm and soon we had given shape to the tonal and electronic monstrosity that is quickly becoming my latest guitar (and definitely one of my favorites.

I will spend the next few days posting some picture I have taken along the way and prepare you for the final product.  It should be ready for finish by the end of the week.  Stay tuned and enjoy.
